The Journey of Our Community STEM Library in Bamenda-Cameroon

In Bamenda, the lack of access to books and learning resources has remained a persistent challenge, with educational resources often out of reach for many learners and families. Access to reading and learning should not be a privilege reserved for a select few, but a basic right for every child and young person.

It all started with just 12 books, donated by our founder who was deeply inspired by the story of William Kamkwamba, the young Malawian boy who, after reading a single book from a local library, built a wind turbine that brought electricity to his village. This story lit a fire in our founder’s heart. He believed that if one book could spark that kind of innovation, then a space filled with books could unlock unimaginable potential in our own community.

With this vision, the first books were placed on the shelves; a small act of hope with a big dream behind it: to make knowledge accessible in a region where libraries were virtually non-existent.

Recognizing this critical need, Education Information Services International (EISERVI) Cameroon joined the effort and supported the initiative, helping us expand and strengthen the library’s foundation. Their support turned a grassroots idea into a growing, impactful reality.

Before the library was established, young people had nowhere to read or borrow books. Many lacked access to textbooks, storybooks, or educational materials which hindered their ability to learn, grow, and imagine new possibilities. The absence of a library meant that learning often stopped when school ended. This became worst with the anglophone crisis.

Through passion, partnership, and community effort, the Community STEM Library has become a safe and welcoming space for children and youths, especially under-resourced and those affected by the  crisis. It offers a vital opportunity to explore subjects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while also encouraging a culture of reading and discovery.

From 12 books, the library grew into a collection of hundreds, becoming a pillar of hope for learners across the region.

What began as a small act of giving which was rooted in the belief that one book can change a life has turned into a powerful movement for educational change. And we are proud to have been part of this journey. We will be prouder to have you join us in demystifying and democratizing access to knowledge through books. Our Community STEM Library is open for book donations.

Before this library, I had never held a science book in my hands. Now, I come here every weekend to read about electricity and robots. One day, I want to invent something to some water or energy problems my village too. Lilian, 14 years old

As a mother, it broke my heart that my children had nothing to read at home. This library has changed everything. Now they are always excited to learn, even outside of school. Mrs. Atanga, Parent

The library has brought new energy to our students. They are more curious, ask deeper questions, and even teach their classmates what they’ve read. It has filled a gap we teachers couldn’t fill alone. Mr. Tembi, Science teacher
